DJ Shadow is one producer you can be sure that every other producer will cite as an inspiration in their musical education, with his debut album Entroducing... being the most mentioned. His work is timeless and considering the era in which it was conceived also classic. A timeless classic, let's say...
Recently he played a gig in Miami's Mansion Club. This venue is one that is normally frequented by the leathery handbags and youthful brats that Miami is home too, so when DJ Shadow was booked there it was a surprise to say the least. Having said that, the only people who would go to a DJ Shadow night are, surprisingly, people who know and are into DJ Shadow. Also, if you're a promoter and you book DJ Shadow you are probably aware of the sort of music he'll play based on the sort of music he makes.
If the music is not suitable for the club don't book him. If it is then do book him. But what shouldn't be done is to book him and then kick him off the decks right in the middle of his set. I mean, you can't ask someone like DJ Shadow to 'play some David Guetta', and even if you could you shouldn't. But that all happened and shortly after Shadow announced to the crowd he was being kicked off the decks the backlash ensued.
Before he left the booth he addressed the crowd, saying: “I’ve waited a long time to play here, but they said this shit is too future for all y’all.” He was subsequently replaced by DJ No Máz (who IS that guy!?). Shadow later wrote on Twitter “I don’t care if I get kicked out of every rich kid club on the planet. I will never sacrifice my integrity as a DJ…ever”.
Why have I bothered to tell you this anecdote? Because the set that he played that night has been uploaded onto soundcloud for your listening pleasure, I imagine recorded in a different venue where he was allowed to finish.
Have a listen. Is this shit too future? Or is it just plain awful? Write opinions on a digital postcard and post them at the bottom of this page. And click here to see the footage of him getting kicked off, recorded on someones phone presumably.
